Report on 10.10.10 Action Day





In what may be called another milestone in the history of GA.Gemanafushi school, its Science club has marked the magic day 10.10.10 with pomp and gaiety. Varied activities were organized with the motto “SAVE THE PLANET”  “<350 ACTION DAY”.



Day’s activities were started with a special assembly which was attended by Students of grade 6 to 9; Teaching staffs; Senior Management Team; Representativeness from various offices, clubs and associations of islands and Parents. Principal of Gemanafushi School, Mr.Pushparaj, presented the agenda of the day’s event and gave a speech on the present day climatic issues. He announced the children that they are working along with millions of people across the globe to find the solution to the climatic changes. In his speech, he also mentioned the noteworthy role of President Mohamed Nasheed, a messenger of 350.org and a role model of all the environmentalist leader . It was followed by the message from the science club about the urgent need to rise against the climate crisis and carbon emission. Everyone took oath to join their hands to conserve the atmosphere by reducing carbon emission and signed a canvas to show their fortitude.

The island has witnessed a spectacular procession at 10:10:10. The rally was flagged off by Mr. Naushaad, the in-charge of GA.Gemanafuishi Police Station. Students to spread the message around the globe , that they have right to live in a peaceful  and safe environment , took active part despite the hot and humid weather. Banners, Placards, Slogan caps added the credit to spread the awareness. Students were supported by almost 50% of the islanders they also took part in the rally. The cool juice provided by the management at the end of the procession brought down the temperature and everyone heaved a sigh of relief.

Mosque is the place where all the islanders gather. Two boards describing the cause and effects of carbon emission were displayed near the mosques. The idea successfully reached all the islanders and it was portrayed from the signature they made on the canvas which was also displayed near to the information board.

At 14:00, it was the time of litter competition. The heaps of waste plastics and metals collected over 2 days by parents and students from the island which weighed 3600 kg raised a question to the islanders. “Are we the protectors or the destroyers of our green planet?” the competition of litter collection has brought tremendous response from the parents. 
The amount of waste collected by different groups of parents were:
Aminath Umemath Group = Plastic 464 kg , Metal 136 kg
Shafura Ali Group = Plastic 310 kg , Metal 196 kg
Latheefa Firag Group = Plastic 276.6 kg , Metal 269.1 kg
Haseena Hussain Group = Plastic 311 kg , Metal 115 kg
Shadheeja Didi Group = Plastic 140.1 kg , Metal 131.5 kg
Mariyam Saadha Group = Plastic 105 kg , Metal 193 kg
Haleemath Saeeda Group = Plastic 103 kg , Metal 144.5 kg
Ramlath Abdulla Group = Plastic 72 kg , Metal 239 kg
Mariyam Latheefa Group = Plastic 6 kg , Metal 100 kg

The amount of waste collected by different groups of students were:
6A Group = Plastic 43 kg , Metal 117 kg
6B Group = Plastic 49 kg , Metal 7 kg
7A Group = Plastic 53 kg , Metal 284 kg
7B Group = Plastic 43 kg , Metal 30 kg
8A Group = Plastic 43 kg , Metal 40.5 kg
8B Group = Plastic 27 kg , Metal 16 kg
9A Group = Plastic 40.6 kg , Metal 18.9 kg
As per the rules of the competition, the weight of the metal was converted in to plastic equivalent weight ( 1kg metal = 250g plastic) and the first three position was finalized.
The winners among the parents groups were:
First Place: Aminath Umemath group
Second Place: Shafura Ali group
Third Place: Latheefa Firag group
The winners among the students group’s were:
First Place: Class 7A
Second Place: Class 6A
Third Place: Class 8A
The results were announced and the prize giving ceremony schedule is announced.

At 16:00, Gemanafushi has seen a spectacular and mesmerizing human exhibit in the island football ground where students in uniform exhibited themselves as <350, 10.10.10. The islanders and the members from other associations also gathered to show their support to stand against climate changes.
At 17:30, a tree planting programme took place in the school campus. It was inaugurated by the Senior Leading teacher Mr. Mohamed Nafiz. It gave a new dimension to the motto “SAVE THE PLANET”. Mr.Nafiz, in his speech explained the role of trees in removing the carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere. He also stressed the fact about the trees in protecting the coastal habitat.

The curtain was brought down at 22:00 after an informative presentation about the present climatic changes and the carbon emission. The effort taken to imprint the seriousness of the carbon emission in the young minds will surely bring positive result in the island in the days to come. Gemanafushi School is proud for playing its part on the 350.org Action Day and spread the message to the world that we have started to work against the climatic changes.
